We designed a three-story wooden house in a quiet residential neighborhood in Minami-Azabu, Tokyo. The site presented several challenges, including a very narrow 1.4-meter-wide street and significant differences in ground level with the neighboring properties. We carefully balanced the functionality and privacy required for urban living with the way a house should relate to its surrounding environment. To emphasize the sculptural form of the house, we developed a continuous Galvalume steel finish from the roof to the walls. We worked closely with the sheet-metal craftsmen through a process of trial and error to achieve clean and continuous joint lines, resulting in a carefully crafted finish. On the third floor, a combination of skylights on the sloped roof and large windows brings in views of the greenery of the neighboring garden. As a result, the bedroom becomes a bright and lush space that feels far removed from the dense urban environment of central Tokyo.
